“We made plastic. We depend on it. Now we’re drowning in it.” That premise is the focus of a new National Geographic exhibition making its U.S. museum debut at Nauticus on January 30, 2021. National Geographic’s Planet or Plastic? exhibition showcases the global plastic waste crisis and highlights innovators working to solve this urgent issue. Featuring the work of researchers, scientists and artists, the exhibition traces the history of plastic and explores the devastating impacts of plastic pollution on our world’s oceans. The exhibition will also feature a look into the rise of single-use plastics due to COVID-19.

“Plastic pollution is one of the most important global environmental challenges of our generation,” says Kathryn Keane, vice president of public programming at the National Geographic Society. “But, it is an issue that we can all do something about. This exhibition informs us about how we got here, the scope of the problem, and how we can each be a part of the solution.”

Through powerful imagery, Planet or Plastic? makes the important case for the need to find a balance between using this material and protecting our environment.

“These images will take your breath away,” said Stephen E. Kirkland, executive director of Nauticus. “They highlight a crisis that’s impacting us all. Every single one of us needs to better understand the impacts plastic is having on the world around us.”

The exhibition provides actionable steps visitors can take in their lives to responsibly reduce, reuse, recycle, and refuse products with single-use plastic. Planet or Plastic? will be on display at Nauticus from January 30 through April 25. Tickets are $15.95 for adults, $11.50 for children and includes access to all Nauticus exhibits and the Battleship Wisconsin.
