After weeks of singing, memorizing lines, practicing dance routines, and attending long rehearsals, the multi-talented cast members of Black Girl Magic are ready for the main stage! Catch multiple performances at Zeider’s American Dream Theater in Virginia Beach!

Under the guidance and leadership of Sharon Cook—the Artistic Director and Founder of UPAC (Underground Performing Arts Collective)—and the choreography of Jennifer Kelly-Cooper, actresses, singers, and dancers begin the final push toward several dates, which begin this week. For information on tickets, check out Zeider’s official website.

Tonight is the first night of dress rehearsal and cast members have arrived early. Some cast members study lines. Several dancers review music and practice routines, carefully finding spots on the stage, and quickly rehearsing before the official start time. Backstage, other cast members busily put on costumes, preparing to run through the show. Production staff members handle all of the behind-the-scenes tasks, darting between the main stage and the backstage area, thinking out loud as they address various issues.

How do I explain the beautiful complexity of Black Girl Magic?

Black Girl Magic is a journey of empowerment, love, self-discovery, hope, loss, and resilience. Follow Sister as she travels through history, connecting with Black women of the past, which help her realize her self-worth, confidence, and internal power.

The production explores the trauma of the past, connects with the aspirations of the present, and leans into the future. Mostly told through historical skits, songs, monologues, stories, speeches, soulful dance routines, and a sprinkling of hip hop, Black Girl Magic can be summed up in one word: unapologetic.

Black Girl Magic is tender, loud, honest, and revolutionary; it wrestles with racial stereotypes, historical conditions, and explores the power of legacy and ancestry.

By exploring these elements, Sister learns the importance of using history as a source inspiration.

Filled with hope and bold self-determination, Black Girl Magic is guaranteed

to inform, inspire, entertain, and empower. It’s scheduled for several presentations at Zeider’s American Dream Theater, starting on March 13, continuing on March 14, and ending on March 15.
