Williamsburg, VA – City Manager Andrew O. Trivette announces the appointment of Tevya Griffin as Director of Planning and Codes Compliance, effective May 16, 2022.

Griffin, the current Director of Development in the City of Hopewell, Virginia, was chosen after a nationwide recruitment and selection process. She succeeds Carolyn Murphy, who retired in December 2021.

A certified planner with the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and a member of the American Planning Association, Griffin has served as Hopewell’s Director of Development since 2013. In this role, Griffin supervises the Planning and Zoning staff, the Building and Code Enforcement inspectors, and the GIS administrator. She is also the city’s zoning administrator and flood plain manager.

Her career with Hopewell began in 2004 as the Housing & Grants Administrator. In 2006, Griffin became the city’s planner. Prior to Hopewell, she began her work in local government as the Long Range Planner for Isle of Wight County.

“Tevya will be an excellent addition to the Williamsburg team,” City Manager Andrew O. Trivette said. “The community and our organization will benefit from the enthusiasm and initiative that she has demonstrated during her successful career in the field of planning and community building.”

As the Director of Planning and Codes Compliance for the City of Williamsburg, Griffin will prepare and update the Comprehensive Plan, the Zoning Ordinance, Subdivision Ordinance, and related documents; manage staff and relationships with Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, and the Architectural Review Board; act as liaison to the Williamsburg Area Transit Authority, Hampton Roads Planning District Commission, and other various boards and committees; serve on the City of Williamsburg’s leadership team; and oversee all department functions for both Planning and Codes Compliance.

Griffin holds a bachelor’s degree in public and urban affairs from Virginia Tech and a master’s degree in community planning from the University of Maryland.

“I am honored to join the talented and dedicated team of employees in the City of Williamsburg,” Griffin said. “The City is a beautiful community where it is evident that great care, planning, and innovation has been adopted to create a quality of life that is admired. I am excited to continue this legacy and to courageously lead planning efforts that are innovative and engaging.”
